Human beings don't necessarily exist inside of (or correspond to) the neat racial, gendered or national boxes into which we often unthinkingly place them.It's a mistake to ask literature to reinforce such structures. Literature tends to crack them. Literature is where we free ourselves.

The things you received without choosing them come with their own set of instructions, and you have been following those instructions longer than you have been questioning them. A family way of handling money, a particular suspicion about strangers, a reflex about what gets said out loud and what gets kept private. You can see now how some of these patterns serve you and how others have outlived their usefulness, but seeing is different from changing. The most honest work begins when you separate what you want to keep from what you are simply used to carrying.
