The words that hang in the air after they have been spoken do not disappear just because you wish they would. They settle into the room and change the temperature of everything that comes after. You can spend weeks trying to talk around them, but they have already done their work on the conversation, on the person who heard them, on you. What you said has become part of what exists between you now, and the only way forward is through the territory it has created. The discomfort of living with what you have said is also the ground where something truer might finally grow.
