The conversation you have been avoiding is not the one you think it is. What you have been rehearsing in your head, the careful explanations and defensive clarifications, those are for a different talk entirely. The real conversation starts when you stop trying to control what the other person will think of what you say and let yourself be surprised by what they actually think. This requires you to mean the words as you say them instead of watching yourself say them. The hardest part is not the talking but the listening to what comes back, because that is when you find out what the conversation was actually about.
