When someone keeps pushing against a boundary you have set, they are not testing the boundary itself but your willingness to hold it. The test is never about whether the rule makes sense or whether you explained it well enough the first time. You already know what they are really asking, even if they have wrapped the question in logic or urgency or just one more exception. The boundary that gets tested repeatedly is the one that threatens something the other person does not want to lose, and your job is not to make them comfortable with losing it.
