The skill you have not used in years is still there, but it has been quietly changing while you were not looking. What you remember about how good you were at it is accurate, but incomplete. The muscle memory remains, but the judgment that guided it has been doing other work in other rooms, and when you return to the old competence, you find it sharper in some places and duller in others than you left it.
