When someone tests a boundary you have set, the test itself is information about something larger than the boundary. The person pushing is not asking whether this particular rule can bend. They are asking what kind of relationship you think you are having, and whether the version of yourself that set the limit is the version that will hold it. The space between their push and your response is where you get to decide not just what happens next, but what kind of conversation this has always been. The boundary was never about the thing itself.
