The work you do because you want to do it, not because anyone assigned it to you, often turns out to be the work that matters most later. You cannot see this while you are doing it, when it feels like stolen time or elaborate procrastination. The thing you make in the margins, without permission or deadline, carries a different quality than the thing you make on command. It knows something about your actual interests that the official projects do not know. The gap between what you choose to work on and what you are told to work on is where you find out what you think about things.
