The favor for a neighbor becomes help with a project becomes covering someone's shift becomes listening to the same story again. What looks like separate choices when you are inside them reveals itself as one long yes when you step back far enough to see the shape. You are more generous with your time than you are honest about what that generosity costs. The thing you have been calling kindness has a second name you have not been willing to use yet.
