The work you find yourself doing that no one ever asked you to do usually starts because you can sense when something needs tending before others notice it is failing. You pick up the thread because letting it drop feels worse than carrying it, even when carrying it means you become the person who always carries it. This kind of stepping in happens so quietly that by the time anyone realizes you have been handling something, it has already become yours by default. The cost is not in the doing but in how invisible the doing becomes, how the care you provide gets mistaken for the natural order of things.
