The private rules you follow, the ones you have never explained to anyone else, usually started as hunches about what would happen if you did not follow them. You might always leave ten minutes earlier than you need to, or never send the first text after a fight, or refuse to make plans on Sundays. These rules feel arbitrary from the outside, but they hold up something you recognized before you could name it. The cost of explaining them is that they would stop working the same way, so you keep them quiet and let other people wonder why you do what you do.
