I didn't want any flowers, I only wanted To lie with my hands turned upand be utterly empty. How free it is, you have no idea how free - The peacefulness is so big it dazes you,And it asks for nothing. ~ Tulips (1961)
Sylvia Plath, Plath: Poems
Some promises were made to keep everyone happy rather than to solve anything real, and those are the ones that become impossible to honor without disappointing someone. You find yourself weighing who gets hurt by your keeping it against who gets hurt by your breaking it, but this is the wrong equation entirely. The right question is whether the promise was ever yours to make in the first place, or whether you offered it because saying no felt like choosing sides. What looks like letting people down is sometimes just stopping the pretense that you can hold up both ends of someone else's problem.
