The thing you inherited that you never asked for requires you to manage other people's feelings about it as much as your own. This creates a particular exhaustion because every conversation about it becomes two conversations at once: what you actually think and what will keep the room steady. You find yourself translating your real response into something more palatable, not because your real response is wrong but because the inheritance came with an unspoken contract to make everyone else comfortable with what you now carry.
