The hardest conversations are the ones you keep not having because you already know what they would reveal. You have both felt the change, the way certain subjects now get walked around instead of walked through, the way responses come a beat slower than they used to. There is a specific exhaustion that comes from maintaining a version of closeness that no longer fits the actual distance between you. The conversation you are avoiding is not about whether things have changed. It is about whether you are both willing to find out what they have changed into.
