The things that were handed down to you without your asking came with their own ideas about what you owe them. Some of what looks like duty is actually habit dressed up in older clothes, and some of what feels like burden is just the weight of never having decided for yourself which parts to keep. You can honor what was given without carrying it exactly as it was carried before. The hardest part is learning which parts of the carrying were always yours to choose and which parts you inherited along with everything else.
