The hardest expectations to refuse are the ones that come wrapped in compliments about who you are and what you do well. Someone sees how you handle things and decides you should handle more things, and the request arrives as recognition rather than burden. You find yourself saying yes to preserve the version of yourself that lives in their eyes, even when that version requires you to bend in directions your actual life cannot accommodate.
