The debt you owe someone has nothing to do with money and everything to do with the fact that they showed up when showing up mattered. You cannot repay attention with attention, or presence with presence, because the moment that made it count has already passed. What you owe exists in a different currency entirely. You can spend years trying to balance this ledger by being available, by remembering birthdays, by checking in, but the original gift was given freely and cannot be matched with effort.
