The version of yourself that you outgrew is still talking, still making its case in the conversations you have with other people. You can hear it in the way you explain a choice you made months ago, the automatic phrases that come out when someone asks what you do for work or why you moved or what you think about something that used to matter more than it does now. There is always this lag between who you have become and the words you still use to describe who you are.
