The person you owe something to that has nothing to do with money is usually someone who gave you their time when you needed it most. This kind of owing sits differently than other kinds because it cannot be paid back in the same currency it was given. You cannot return three hours of patient listening or the exact quality of attention someone offered when your life was falling apart. What you can do is notice when the next person needs what you once needed, and give it without keeping track. The balance comes from passing it forward, not paying it back.
