The hardest expectations to refuse are the ones that sound like love but require you to become smaller than you are. Someone wants you to stay worried about the same things they worry about, or to keep needing their approval for decisions that are already yours to make. You can feel the weight of their disappointment when you stop performing the version of yourself they prefer, but that weight was never yours to carry. What looks like letting them down is often just the sound of you deciding that your own judgment gets the final vote.
