The things you do when you feel uncertain only show their true purpose after you have done them enough times to see the thread. What looked like random responses to different situations was actually the same response, refined across months. You reach for the same small actions when the ground shifts, and only now can you see that these actions have been teaching you something about what you actually need. The pattern was there from the first time, but it needed the weight of repetition to become visible. What you thought was you figuring it out as you went was you listening to something you already knew.
