The things you end up responsible for without anyone asking are often the things no one else wanted to see needed doing. You pick up the phone call that should have gone to someone else, you stay late to finish the project that was falling through cracks, you become the person who remembers the detail everyone else forgot. This happens because you notice the gap between what a situation needs and what it is getting, and something in you cannot leave that gap unfilled. The cost is that once you do it the first time, the responsibility becomes yours by default, as if you had volunteered for a job that was never posted.
