A compliment that sits wrong with you is often right about something you are not ready to be seen for yet. The words themselves might be accurate, but they arrived from someone who was looking at a version of you that feels too new or too much like trying on clothes in front of a mirror with bad lighting. You take the praise and feel oddly exposed, as if they have noticed something you were still deciding whether to keep. What bothers you is not that they were wrong about what they saw, but that they saw it before you were ready to own it fully yourself.
