The version of yourself that you outgrew is still doing work for you, even though you no longer live there. It shows up in the way you apologize too quickly or hold back the thing you most want to say, a reflex that once kept you safe in a room you have long since left. You can see it most clearly in moments when someone asks you what you need and your first instinct is to deflect toward what they might need instead. The old self was not wrong to develop these patterns, but your current life has different requirements. What protected you then might be what limits you now.
