A compliment that feels wrong usually tells you something about the person giving it, not about you. When someone praises the version of yourself that requires the least from them, or notices only the parts of your work that make their life easier, the praise itself becomes information. You can feel it in how the words sit afterward, like clothes that do not fit but that someone insists look good on you. The discomfort is not ingratitude. It is your instinct recognizing that being seen partially is sometimes worse than not being seen at all.
