The conversation you need to have will not improve with more preparation. You already know what you need to say, and the other person already knows something needs to be said. What you are calling preparation is actually the thing that makes difficult conversations impossible: the belief that there is a perfect version of this talk waiting somewhere ahead of you. There is not a perfect version. There is only the version that happens when you decide the time for thinking about it is over. The words you need will show up when your mouth opens, not before.
