The conversation you keep avoiding is actually three conversations, and you have been trying to have all of them at once. There is the thing that needs to be said, the thing that needs to be heard, and the thing that needs to change afterward. Each one requires a different kind of attention from both of you. What feels like one big impossible talk is really a sequence, and the sequence has an order that becomes obvious once you stop trying to solve everything in the first five minutes. The conversation that needs to happen is the first conversation, not the last one.
