The quality of mercy is not strained; it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed: it blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice
The debts that matter most are the ones you cannot pay back in the same currency they were given. Someone believed in you before you had earned it, stayed patient through your worst year, or held space for a version of yourself you had not grown into yet. These obligations live in a different ledger than the kind with payment plans and interest rates. You cannot square them by returning the exact favor, but you can honor them by extending the same quality of attention to someone else who needs what you once needed. The debt moves forward rather than backward, and that is how it gets settled.
