The version of yourself you outgrew is still making decisions for you in small ways you have stopped noticing. It shows up in the automatic yes when you mean no, the joke you make to soften a point that should stay sharp, the way you apologize for taking up space that was already yours. This older self was built for different conditions, and those conditions no longer exist. What you are doing now is not rejecting who you were but refusing to let who you were decide what you do next. The work is daily and it is quiet and it never announces itself as the work.
