The things you carry forward from your family are not always things you would have chosen to carry. Some of them feel like obligations handed down without your consent, skills you developed because someone else needed them, ways of being in the world that served a purpose you never quite understood. You find yourself using these tools anyway, even when you resent having them, because they work in situations where nothing else does. What feels like burden in private becomes resource in public, and the people who need what you can do don't care how reluctantly you learned to do it.
