The thing you are most afraid of wanting is usually the thing you want most, and the fear exists because you know how much it would ask of you to actually reach for it. You have spent months or years keeping this particular desire at a careful distance, calling it unrealistic or selfish or poorly timed, when the real problem is that pursuing it would require you to stop managing how other people see your choices. The wanting itself is not the dangerous part. The dangerous part is that following it through would mean letting other people be disappointed in you, or confused by you, or worried about you, without stepping in to fix their response. The year ahead is the one that asks whether you are ready to want something more than you are ready to be understood for wanting it.
