There is an expectation someone else has been carrying about what you should want, and you have been agreeing to it so automatically that you forgot it was not yours to begin with. The agreement happened so long ago that backing out of it now feels like betrayal, even though you are the one who would be most betrayed by staying. What looked like loyalty was actually a kind of forgetting, and what feels like fickleness might be the first honest thing you have done about this in years.
