There are relationships that change their entire shape without either person ever naming what happened, and you are standing inside one of them now. The old way of being together stopped working months ago, but the new way has not been agreed upon, so you exist in the gap where both people know something is different and neither wants to be the first to say it out loud. What makes this particular kind of limbo so strange is that the relationship itself continues to function on its surface while running on completely different fuel underneath. The conversations still happen, the routines still hold, but the unspoken question in the room has grown large enough that it shapes every exchange. The year ahead is the year that asks whether the thing that needs to be said is worth the risk of saying it, or whether some changes are meant to happen in the spaces between words.
