The things you carry that you never chose to pick up often reveal themselves not as grand revelations but as ordinary Tuesday realizations while you are doing something else entirely. You notice you hold your coffee the same way your father did, or you catch yourself using a phrase that belonged to someone who shaped you before you knew shaping was happening. What seemed like nothing when it was passed along turns out to be the thing that explains why you approach problems the way you do, why certain kinds of people make you tired, why you have strong opinions about things that do not matter to anyone else. The year ahead is the one that stops asking whether you want what you were given and starts asking what you plan to do with it now that you can see it clearly.
