The words that change everything are rarely the ones you planned to say, and they almost never arrive with warning or ceremony. They come out sideways during an ordinary conversation, or at the end of a long day when your usual filters are down, and suddenly there they are in the room with you and the person who heard them. You cannot pull them back or soften them after the fact, and you cannot pretend they mean something other than what they mean. What you can do is stop treating them like a mistake that needs to be managed and start treating them like information that was waiting to be known. The year ahead asks you to sit with what you said without rushing to fix it, and see what becomes possible when you let the words be as true as they sounded when they left your mouth.
